Help improve life for people with Down syndrome worldwide by supporting

DOWN SYNDROME INTERNATIONAL’S UNCRPD GLOBAL OUTREACH PROGRAMME
ON WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY
PLEASE MAKE A DONATION
21 March 2012

Hello everyone

I am a mother of a wonderful young lady with Down syndrome (DS) whom I have adored for 30 years now. She lives in her own apartment, has a dog, a fiancé and a job working for the local city council. She loves life and spends most of her time planning for her wedding later in 2012. Her fiancé comes down by train every weekend to see her. He also has DS. I am amazed at how well their relationship has developed.

Like everyone else who has children, my daughter has given me so much delight, and together we have met many challenges along the way. As a family we have grown stronger for knowing her.

I am the Chair of Down Syndrome International (DSi), which is a UK registered charity (though I work in Indonesia and live in Australia) with an international remit to improve the lives of people with DS. Our aim as an organisation is to ensure that people with DS all over the world are able to participate in their communities in the same way that my daughter does.

It is estimated that there are 7 million people with DS worldwide and it is the most common and recognised form of learning disability in the world. But in most of the world’s countries people with DS face a harsh reality of very low life expectancy, physical and psychological abuse, stigma and segregation, and very limited life opportunities as children and adults. People with DS living in poverty face all of these challenges but it is also the case across the spectrum of wealth due to educational, political, medical and social barriers.

To give you an example, in some African tribes, babies with DS are often believed to be cursed and may be left overnight on a river bank. If the baby is still alive in the morning, it is seen as a sign from God that the baby should be kept. If the baby does not make it through the night, which is often a result of the tide or wild animals, it is viewed that God took the baby. For the babies that do make it through the night, they rarely receive medical care and spend most of their lives isolated from their tribe.

DSi would like to challenge this reality by undertaking a Global Outreach Programme using the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) as a basis, providing training and support to DS advocacy organisations in such countries, to empower them to advocate for the rights of people with DS to basic living standards, medical care, education and acceptance into society, and importantly allow people with DS to advocate for themselves.

DSi has worked very hard since 2006 to establish WDSD as a global awareness day which is now celebrated in more than 80 countries. Our initiatives including the WDSD website, WDSD Global Video Event and our recent successful appeal to the United Nations for official Observance status for WDSD, have meant that individuals, groups and organisations all over the world are able to raise awareness and fundraise on this day, and we ask you all to recognise our work by supporting this important Programme so that we can help others less fortunate than us to raise the profile of people with DS in their countries.

There are so many DS advocacy organisations helping people with DS and their families who have no support from within their own countries and are in desperate need of our help. But we cannot do this without funding. So with World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) upon us on 21 March 2012, DSi would like to kindly request that you join with us to support our global community of people with DS by making a donation to enable DSi to commence our UNCRPD Global Outreach Programme.

DSi is a relatively small charity without a significant track record of delivering major outreach programmes. Therefore in the current bleak financial climate, we do not have the ability to compete for funding with the much larger multi-national charity and aid organisations and we are overlooked by many major donors, trusts, foundations and corporations. Without the support of our members and the global Down syndrome community, we will not be able to deliver on our Global Outreach Programme, and we will also not be able to continue to deliver our current level of services, including World Down Syndrome Day and helping people with Down syndrome and their families be heard in the international community through our network

To make a donation right now:

·         Go to our Just Giving Page http://www.justgiving.com/dsint/Donate, where you can make a donation from anywhere in the world.
·         If you are based in the UK, you can donate via text message. Simply text “CRPD21” followed by the amount “£….” to the number“70070”.
·         If you are based in USA, then please contact the DSi office to make sure that your donation will be tax-efficient.
·         Or you can make a donation by credit card, cash, cheque, electronic transfer or other means by visiting the DSi website Donate page http://www.ds-int.org/donate .

We will gratefully receive any donation and will use this money to have a direct positive impact on the lives of people with DS throughout the world.

For further information on this project, DSi or how to support us, please do not hesitate to contact our Director Andrew Boys atandrew.boys@ds-int.org or on 0044 2086145124, or visit our website www.ds-int.org

Thank you very much for your support for people with Down syndrome. It is amazing what people coming together all over the world can achieve!

Kind Regards

PENNY ROBERTSON
CHAIR – DOWN SYNDROME INTERNATIONAL

> Meine Email Adresse: write-me@fairybread.com

> Ich freue mich!

Herzlichst, iren

  2. Liebe Christina,
